Life could be this beautiful without NBC-TV in it.

Another "Star Wars" movie is upon us, and the only response this can seem to generate is "who cares?" Lucas should have stopped making "Star Wars" movies after "Empire Strikes Back" was completed. "Return Of The Jedi" was such a badly written mess, (and it remains a badly written mess to this day), that it does not fit into the continuity established in "Star Wars" and "Empire Strikes Back." Though Lucas claims he wrote this saga in one big chunk back in the 1970's, we all know he has actually been writing these movies as he has been going along.
George Lucas has assured everyone that all plot inconsistencies would be explained if all six of his movies were viewed one right after the other. Yet, Lucas still has not explained why Luke and Leia were french kissing each other in the "Empire Strikes Back", yet turned out to be brother and sister in "Return Of The Jedi." This sibling revelation not only obliterated all of the romantic tension between Luke, Leia, and Han in the first two movies, it also did it in an embarrassing way. Part of the fun of the first two movies was seeing who Leia would end up with, Luke or Han. George Lucas will never admit to making mistakes. He will give endless excuses as to why he made the decisions that he did in "Return Of The Jedi", but he will never admit that the decision to make Luke and Leia siblings was just, plain, BAD. Lucas claims that he has also referred to Luke and Leia as "The Twins" in all of his "Star Wars" drafts, even dating back to the writing of "A New Hope" in the 1970's. If this is the case, then why was there romantic overtones to their relationship in both "Star Wars" and "Empire Strikes Back."
It doesn't need to be proven that George Lucas has been writing these movies of his as he has been going along. The contents of these movies speak for themselves and rest the case. Luke and Leia were not brother and sister in the first two movies because "Battlestar Galactica" had not come out yet. Though "Galactica" was on the air when "Empire Strikes Back" was in production, the lawsuit had not yet been settled, with Lucas still thinking there would be an optimistic outcome in his favor. When he lost the lawsuit, did Lucas want to get back at "Battlestar Galactica" in some way? What better way to do it than to make Luke and Leia brother and sister in order to emulate siblings Apollo and Athena? Make Darth Vader the daddy to emulate the "Adama" family even further. Lucas made his space saga the "Battlestar: Ponderosa" to stomp on the grave of "Battlestar Galactica." Who cares if such BAD decision making OBLITERATED all of the events in "A New Hope" and "Empire Strikes Back?" Lucas was going to get back at "Battlestar Galactica" and by God, he did!! I believe "Return Of The Jedi" was George Lucas's temper tantrum directed at "Battlestar Galactica."
"Return Of The Jedi" SUCKS on so many additional levels, it's impossible to cover all of them. Leia and Han had a feisty, romantic tension with barbs in the first two movies that carried the plots along. In "Return Of The Jedi", there relationship comes to a dead stop. Their behavior as comatose love birds is so embarrassing to watch, you wonder if Richard Marcquand had any experience directing actors. Additionally; Hamill, Ford, and Fisher act in this movie as if they are crawling through mud. The three of them look and act worn out, tired, and exhausted. It makes you wonder if the rumors are true that the three of them were on as much drugs during filming, as the "Moist Boys" routinely take on a daily basis before they post.
Did we have to have another opening shot of an "Imperial Star Destroyer" in "Return Of The Jedi?" Did we have to have another "Death Star" fight? Did we have to have a movie where George Lucas did not demand reshoots of endless scenes with the three leads bacause their acting was so bad? Granted, movies of this size are logistical nightmares to make. But, George Lucas could have spared the world his ENDLESS bad decisions in this movie if he had kept Gary Kurtz at his side as CO-CREATOR. So many BAD DECISIONS ended up on the screen in this movie it's hard to believe that the man responsible for "A New Hope" and "Empire Strikes Back" made those BAD DECISIONS.
About the only compliment that can be made for this movie is that the special effects are really good. Of course, there were no technological advancements made in "Return Of The Jedi." Just further refinements of the 1970's special effects technology that was already eight years old. In "Return Of The Jedi", the handwriting was on the wall. George Lucas had gone as far as he could go with motion control and blue screen. The simple fact that it looks tired and worn out rests the case.
In the remaining "Star Wars" movies, George Lucas continues to dig himself a creative grave. His CRAPPY scriptwriting in "Phantom Menace", "Attack Of The Clones", and inevitably; "Revenge Of The Sith"; is not pardoned by endless CGI effects that no longer take audiences by surprise. A good script and good directing are the only two things that can save a movie. Since George Lucas is INCAPABLE of either one, we have "Star Wars" movies that have become endless torture to sit through. Whatever talents George Lucas had in his youth have been eroded away through decades of simply getting older. Though George Lucas predicted the level of his talents in old age when he made "Howard The Duck" in the mid-1980's.
George Lucas still won't lay "Star Wars" to rest. Going back to the original trilogy yet again to give us 3D-versions of the movies. Who cares? Lucas either needs to retire (which he can do, financially), or turn "Star Wars" over to someone who can get the saga back on the right track.
